Uterine artery embolization (UAE) is a procedure where an interventional radiologist, like Dr. Wendell Gibby, uses a catheter to deliver small particles that block the blood supply to the uterine body. If the procedure is done for the treatment of uterine fibroids it is also called uterine fibroid embolization (UFE).
Under local anesthesia a catheter is guided into the femoral artery at the groin under ultrasonic imaging into the uterine artery. There micro-particules (spheres or beads) are released which block the vessel. Because alternative blood flow is available the uterus will not suffer necrosis even if both arteries are blocked. The treatment is not a surgical procedure and allows the woman's uterus to remain intact.
This procedure can be used to relieve the main symptoms related to uterine fibromata (including pelvic pain, excessive vaginal bleeding, and compression). This intervention is an alternative to surgery in case of symptoms related to uterine fibroids. At Riverwoods Imaging Center the procedure is performed by Wendell Gibby, MD, an interventional radiologist. UAE is often used to control heavy uterine bleeding for reasons other than fibroids, such as in cases of postpartum bleeding (vaginal hemorrhage).

Uterine fibroids often do have not symptoms. But typical symptoms may include:
- Irregular, prolonged, or heavy periods
- Painful, infrequent, or irregular urination
- Rectal problems, such as pain
How well does Uterine Fibroid Embolization (UFE) work?
UFE is a very effective, minimally invasive treatment.
- Excessive bleeding stops for 90%-92% of patients, and cured other symptoms in 88%-96% of patients.
